Colombo Rowing Club clinch Adyar and Deepam Trophies

The Colombo Rowing Club (CRC) achieved a striking victory in the 83rd Madras-Colombo Regatta, clinching both the prestigious Adyar Trophy for the Ladies’ Overall Championship and the Deepam Trophy for the Men’s Overall Championship. Held on the Beira Lake in Colombo.

The regatta featured intense competition, particularly in the ‘A’ Doubles Scull and ‘A’ Four events, where CRC faced strong challenges from the Madras Boat Club (MBC). These two events proved to be pivotal, marking the turning point in CRC’s historic win.

CRC approached the ‘A’ Doubles Scull with confidence. Their victory in this event was a noteworthy morale booster for the team and a psychological blow to their opponents. The CRC’s success in this race set the tone for the rest of the regatta.

In the Men’s “B” Scull race, CRC delivered a commendable performance with a time of 3:34, beating MBC, which finished in 3:42. However, in the Men’s “A” Scull, CRC fell short of matching MBC’s speed, recording a time of 4:02 compared to Madras’s 3:47. Despite this, CRC’s strong showing in the sculls displayed their overall success.

The Men’s “A” Pair race was another highlight for CRC. The team finished with a time of 3:23, narrowly beating MBC, which completed the race in 3:27. CRC’s performance was equally impressive in the Men’s “B” Pair, where they clocked 3:39, defeating Madras’s 3:59.

In the Women’s Pair race, CRC edged out MBC with a time of 4:01, while MBC finished at 4:06. The Women’s Double Scull was closely contested, with CRC finishing at 3:52 against Madras’s 3:57.

The Men’s “A” Double Scull saw CRC finishing with a strong time of 3:01, surpassing MBC, which recorded 3:07. CRC also performed admirably in the Men’s “B” Double Scull with a time of 3:11, compared to Madras’s 3:19. In the Women’s Scull, CRC clocked 4:02, faster than Madras’s 4:11, reinforcing their control in multiple events.

The Men’s “B” Four was a standout performance for CRC, with the team finishing at an impressive 2:59, besting Madras’s 3:04. Similarly, CRC excelled in the Women’s Four, achieving a time of 3:29 compared to Madras Boat Club’s 3:37.

The Boat Race, a crucial component of the regatta, saw CRC finishing with a decisive time of 2:50, significantly faster than Madras Boat Club’s 3:05. This key victory in the final race secured CRC’s overall triumph in the regatta.
